Life and Prime numbers

A quote from 'The curious incident of the dog in the night-time' by Mark Haddon. I've only just started reading this, but this part got me thinking... what does is he trying to get at exactly?
Prime numbers are what is left when you have taken all the patterns away. I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about them.
Are there really no rules for prime numbers? or do we just not know them? What about rules for life?

hmm interesting! =)
Although I think the boy in the story is more saying there are so many rules its impossible to remember them all (since autism makes his brain see things differently)
not sure its the best analogy though...since I thought there were just 2 rules for prime number? Then again I never did further then GCSE maths!
Enjoy the book :)

Thanks - I think he is talking about the fact that you can only find a prime number one at a time, you can't just say 'some really large number' is prime without first working out the what the last one was.. or by checking lots...
